On Being Alone, Bikes, Bonnets & Bits ‘N’ Bobs

June 15, 2009

Where has the weekend gone? So many plans to get so much done…and the weekend has gone in the blink of an eye!! But I did finish Rachel’s bonnet…!!Rachel's Bonnet 005

The Bike Fest was held yesterday, at The Brayford Pool, and the weather was lovely for it…but I didn’t go. The Echo deemed it a  roaring success… http://www.thisislincolnshire.co.uk/news/Motorbike-festival-roaring-success/article-1075215-detail/article.html

This morning, Robert went off to London for a bit of a re-union with some old school chums, which leaves me with no distractions, so I have been able to get on drawing up my bodice pattern pieces and cutting up my fabric. I made a mock up in some spare fabric, and Robert helped me last night, when I tried it on, by holding it (overlapped as if buttoned). It fits!!

Now I can cut out the pieces in the main fabric and get stitching. This is not going to be a period-correct bodice, as I will be wearing a short jacket, called a spencer, over the top. (I have plenty of fabric left over to make a period-correct bodice later).

There are so many things that I want to spend my money on, at the moment, that I am going to have to think about what is really necessary and what isn’t….black leather pumps in Barratts £10…Russian braid for decorating spencer and reticule, etc…book, The Landships of Lincoln £10…and a few more things, as usual!

Hmmm…I might get the shoes first (if they’ve still got any), as stock is changing all the time.

I am back working in London tomorrow and Thursday in the area Bob grew up in again, might even pull him over and have a chat! We are starting at 6am and finishing at 10pm so chances are if he is on the road he will see us.

You\’re in \’ammersmiff, then? Where he was born. Am trying to remember places he lived. Greenford…he went to school, there, and is stopping there with ex in-laws tonight.

The bonnet looks lovely! It really does look pretty. The list of wants and needs eh? We don\’t even have a Barratts anymore 😦 reminds me I need to find a new pair of sandals – mine are reaching the stage where there is more glue than sole left!Looking forward to seeing your next project finished!

We have had rumbling thunder all day but not even a drop of rain. My Aunt 5 miles away says it is thundering and drizzle. Please please don\’t rain tomorrow when I am stuck at work with no shelter. Last time work gave us hire cars so at least we had somewhere to sit on our breaks, this time it is by coach.

Blue skies and sunshine so far today – my head has been telling me all day it\’s going to be a good storm when it hits though! I\’m hoping I\’m home by then though.. it\’s great to stand on the door step and watch as it gets stuck in the valley and bounces back and forth 🙂

One of these days I\’m going to remember that I have a laptop and only have to pull the cord to protect it against power surges!Ahhhh Sandi, it really is lovely. I can\’t wait to see it properly. Thank you so much for all your hard work.I know what you mean about wanting lots of things at the moment. Birthday season is once again on me with both daughters wanting ipods. I\’m nearly at the point on my patchwork where I need the backing to the quilt which I reckon will cost about £50. I bought the wadding the other day to break the spending down a bit and that was £30. Quite fancy an ipod myself too. Hmmmm, better go turn on the red light tonight to earn some money. They usually pay me to turn the thing off once I open the door so it\’s an easy way to earn a few bob.As for the weather, I stupidly paid attention to the met office this morning (why do I do that?) and saw that storms were due for this afternoon. Changed my whole day around and did my shopping this morning to accommodate and got wet. Up until now, this afternoon has been lovely and sunny. Go figure!!

I don\’t know, Rachel…why do you listen to the Met? I like area specific weather report…like on my Home page. Though that gives you the weather as it is now…rather than a few hours time…but it does come from Waddington (just up the hill)!I\’m glad you like it…(might hate it when you receive it…if you do, I\’ll go stick my head in the oven…!!)Gotta go to W**k now…see ya\’s all later…!

Don\’t work too hard Sandi!! And no gassing yourself out red doesn\’t suit you ;-)I\’m still waiting for the torrential rain and storms we\’re supposedly having since about 12 today.. it is getting grey out there but it\’s still hot.

Eileen, I know what you mean about head telling you there is a storm due. I have had a splitting headache all day which will probably go when the air does clear. Used to suffer migraines and learnt to cope with them just abbout but todays headache has reminded me all over again. Not used to headaches these days.

I keep trying to get Rachel to come to Bath in September, but she says she will feel silly dressing in her costume and promenading in the streets…with well over a hundred others in their costumes, too. Actually, I\’m not sure if it\’s over two or three hundred people, now…the numbers go up every year.

It would be easy to just go there and try it, afterall if you did not like it then get changed and leave or watch! Shame to miss out on a day that could turn out to be thoroughly enjoyable with other people getting into the swing of things.

Exactly! That\’s what Natalia said…she\’ll definitely be there. We went along in 2007, and even Robert and his mum enjoyed themselves…the atmosphere was wonderful. There\’s a Regency Fair in Queen Square for most of the day, with music and stalls and other stuff going on. I\’m looking forward to it!

My travelling comfort zone has a radius of about eight miles. After that my knees start to shake and knock together something chronic! Would love to be able to make the trip but I\’s scared stiff and my money is leaving the bank faster than it\’s going in at the moment. Don\’t give up on me yet though as I\’d love to come and meet you all. xx

Having to do a long journey by train panics me, especially when I have to change trains….am I on the right one?! What if I end up in the back of beyond…?!!!! Stay calm, woman!!!

Oh I know what you mean, but having had to commute for my previous profession cured me of that, the only thing I\’m not really happy about is eating in a restaurant on my own (although a good book can cure that). Traveling around London cured me of getting lost – got on the wrong train so many times!

  33. Sandi permalink
    June 16, 2009 10:44 am

A seasoned traveller I am not, I\’m afraid. I always got to where I was going, but always with a sense of panic that I would get lost…though I never did. Daft bugger, or what?!!

  34. Eileen permalink
    June 16, 2009 10:58 am

I was more worried about missing my trains! Getting lost is part of travelling isn\’t it? That\’s how you find places by accident – always a new adventure. Can you tell I was brought up by a woman who had no sense of direction? My mum still manages to get lost taking me home (and I\’ve lived in my house for over 16 years!). Give me a map and I can find my way anywhere – I take after my dad.

  35. Sandi permalink
    June 16, 2009 11:17 am

That too…as I don\’t have much patience for \’waiting around\’ so if I missed a connection, I\’d hate it if the next one was an hour or more…grrr!! I detest hanging around at bus stops when buses don\’t turn up…I hate big queues…and crowds. I just like to get from A to B with the minimum of fuss….a bit like how I like to do my shopping…in, get what I want, out…sorted! I take after my dad in that respect.

Always take a book where ever you go! When I was working in Yeovil one time I ended up having to spend the night at the station because the train was actually early for once and I missed it – it was the last train. Not a nice experience!I don\’t like shopping, hate big queues and since the CFS I don\’t like crowds either.

The two o\’clock from Penzance is a lovely train. It\’s nearly always quiet and having sat in the station for an hour, it\’s always clean. Trains don\’t bother me but the thought of buses or taxi\’s ……….. no ta.Used to think nothing of going up to Bristol for training sessions on my own for the week. That were a while back now though! I haven\’t been more than twenty miles away from home now for sixteen years.

I have never had confidence to find my way anywhere even with a map. But now my job takes me all over this county and up to three counties away. I make a google map, take a map book and the sat nav, the world has opened up and I can find my way wherever I need.Sandi, Bob text me to meet up yesterday afternoon but it would have been difficult. I only had 15 minute breaks and as we were by the North Circular at Ealing it was too busy and he would not have been able to park. Shame. Left home at 3am got home at 9pm knackered! Same again tomorrow.
