Restless & Wild…!

October 13, 2009
Have I finally come down to earth with a bump?  I really cannot explain the mood that seemed to suddenly descend on me yeaterday.  Was it brought on by the shock of finding out that I need varifocals, and that the cost was a lot more than I had anticipated on spending on a pair of new glasses…?!!!

The cheque from the taxman was lovely, especially as this is a five week month, and I was already skint, but I was not in any rush to go out and spend, spend, spend!  No, instead I compiled a list of things that are needed, and new glasses was near the top…but the thought of varifocals has really stirred my head up!!  These glasses are fine, as I can see distance clearly, and I can see close things clearly.  The only thing I have a problem with is reading and close work, which is why it was time for an eye test.

So, as I said…I have no idea what has rattled me the most:  The need for varifocals (for I’m not convinced that I really do ‘need’ varifocals!), or the extortionate price!!!!  Suffice it to say, I was quite wound up about it by the time I arrived home from work, with the result that I could settle to nothing and ended up going to bed early through boredom.

It has turned out to be a lovely day, again, today, so I decided to take my sewing into the kitchen so I could enjoy the sunshine.  The reticule that I am making is to go with the bonnet…I came to a standstill with that because I’d stitched the brim fabric too tight, and will have to re-do it.  Before I stitch the lining into the reticule, I must make a tassel to go on the bottom, as this has to be sewn through.

Anyway, what I am rambling on about is that my train of thought is not running smoothly…it seems to be all over the place.  I start doing something, and five minutes later I have put it down and am prowling about the flat like a caged animal…I feel restless, unable to settle to anything…I need something to look forward to…I need something interesting or exciting to happen…but instead there is only boring normality!!  I don’t feel like this very often, but when I do, I almost feel like screaming and pulling my hair out…!  Why do I feel like this…?  Baring teeth

Would buying two pairs of glasses work out cheaper than the one? My mother has varifocals and hates them because the right bit of focus is never in the right place and she ends up looking down her nose to speak people or tripping over things.I know what you mean by needing something to look forward to. I think it\’s like the first thing you said up there. The joy of going to Bath and having looked forward to that for so long has dwindled now and it\’s back to the norm. Next year seems too far away to get excited about it yet. Not sure I can suggest anything that would be any good. "Been there and done that" doesn\’t help you. What do I do? Sit and stew normally. Useless ain\’t I?I can do hugs though! Big HUGS. xx

Oh I know a lot of peple who don\’t like varifocals.. if possible can you not just get reading glasses to wear when you\’re doing the closeup things? As for some thing to look forward to.. the faeryfest….. Christmas…. New Year….

I\’m assuming verifocals are the same as the progressive lenses I\’ve worn for the past 10 years. Every time I get a new pair I spend a day or so trying to find the ground with my feet as I walk until I get the hang of which part of the new lens to focus on. After that I\’m okay for a year or so until I need another new pair. My vision changes rapidly as I have first stage glaucoma in addition to presbyopia. That restless feeling sounds like what I go through each year after New Years when the holiday decorations come down and everything is sort of gray and drab. Nothing seems to hold my interest for long and cabin fever starts to set in with the heavy snows.

I know how you\’re feeling Sandi as I was pretty much the same all weekend..and knowing you may have to spend money you haven\’ got on something you\’re not sure you need can\’t have helped…The sun was shining, there were loads of things I could have been quite happy doing, but instead flitted from one thing to another getting extremely frustrated by anything and everything.I think cabin fever may be setting in…Maybe a good scream would do us all some good…but I wouldn\’t go with the pulling hair part…sounds painful xxx

Sandi I was unsure about having Varifocals, but once I got used to them they were a boon instead of having to have a series of spec for various jobs as well as my Bi-focals now I can just stick to the same pair all day — it takes a few days to get used to them but I bet when you use them for your sewing and to be on the comp you will be glad you got them!

Thank you all for your suggestions and comments…I really don\’t know what to do yet, regarding the glasses, as I\’m happy with these, apart from having a bit of trouble with small writing and close-up stuff…as for needing a different prescription for the computer and another for distance, that\’s all tosh!! It\’s all just as clear!! I\’ll think about it some more and probably go back next week.As for the funny mood, it seems to have passed. I have just descended into my normal, boring, fed-up with the status quo kind of mood…must be the weather, as it has been raining, and is just grey and cloudy today…though I\’m not sure if it is trying to brighten up a bit. I do hope so!The reticule is beginning to look good…bought a tassel from Boyes for £1.25, and have beaded the points of the diamond shapes…will add photos in a bit. Just got to do the lining and add ribbons.Hungry now…time for breakfast…and another cup of tea…!!

Have got to get a roll of dressmaker\’s paper….for tracing the pattern onto, then some calico to make the mock-up of Robert\’s tail-coat (so that I can do the alterations before I find some decent woollen fabric to make the coat proper.) I\’ll also have a look at all the Hallowe\’en stuff that\’s out for some ideas…or even poke around in some charity shops for a decent top to embellish…!

  46. Eileen permalink
    October 16, 2009 1:49 pm

Ah! Question.. I have the pattern but I don\’t want to cut it all out etc.. I suppose I need to trace it on dressmaker\’s paper too? Then I can make the altherations I want to the pattern there yes?

  47. Sandi permalink
    October 16, 2009 2:12 pm

Yep. The dressmakers paper is thin enough to lay over the top of the actual pattern and trace off what you want. If you buy cheap (thin) calico and make up your garment in that first, you can alter it to fit, and draw in the alterations as you go…using a different colour pen. This way, you don\’t ruin the fashion fabric by cutting it wrong or undoing it and doing it again. I always tack first, until I\’m happy with it, then it gets sewn properly.
