There’s No Business Like Snow Business

November 30, 2009

This is just going to be another general waffle about stuff, as nothing much has happened this last month or so to warrant regular blogs.

First, a quick mention of what is going on in Lincoln. The Thursday before last, the Christmas lights were turned on by none other than…Cannon and Ball! Yes, I’m afraid those old crusties are still around, and are in panto at the Theatre Royal!! (Last week Bath’s lights were turned on by the tasty Nicholas Cage…oh, what a contrast!!! I know who I’d rather see!) Anyway, this was the start of late night shopping.

Last Thursday Lincoln’s ice rink was opened, and I must admit that it looks lovely at night with all the coloured lights and Christmas trees…very festive.

Now everyone is talking about snow, and in between the sunshine and showers, those clouds do look as though they might be preparing for a precipitation of the white stuff…though the days of real snow, in this region, have long gone I fear. All we seem to get now is a dusting of the cold, wet, slippery slop…which I hate. As it is deceptively slippery, more accidents seem to occur than when we had real snow.

Just to remind you, if like us you have forgotten what snow is…this is my sister and our snowman (Feb 79)Jan & the Giant Snowman ,

and my nephew (about 1990-92)David ,

and my brother hogging the unfinished sledge.Bill & David

That big snowman looks just like my mate Pete that I look after sometimes. He smiles just like that now and he\’s always got a hat on.Yeah, I remember when the snow used to come up over your knees and it used to crunch when you walked on it too. They certainly don\’t make it like they used to! My two still haven\’t seen proper snow. Yes we had a bit last year but it only came up to our ankles for heavens sake. Love to see it but hate the thought of people having to be out in it.I fancy a snowball fight ……………………………….

Rachel, that satisfying creak and crunch when walking in proper snow…you can\’t beat it…and feeling it build up on the soles of your boots…!Eileen, ours never settled last winter…it came down thick and fast and melted alost as quickly!Natalia, I\’ll pass on the bibliography…and as for childhood memories…yeah, I guess you\’re right (as I\’ve never grown out of my first childhood yet…hehehe!)Hey guys…my snowman\’s bigger than your snowman…!! Oooh…snowball fight, eh…?!! Take that…!

I grew up in Virginia Beach where 2 inches of snow would shut the city down for days. It rarely snows there and they really don\’t have any snow removal equipment. When we moved here, where it does S N O W!!!!, Laura was 12 years old and had only seen snow 3 or 4 times in her entire life. She\’s a regular snow bunny now and has even taken up snowboarding. We routinely get 6 inches+ at a time of the crunchy stuff from mid Decemeber through mid March and somethimes as late as Easter. The snow doesn\’t bother me but I hate the ice that comes with it. If there is a slick spot within 10 miles I\’ll find it and fall on my butt.

Looking forward to the festive photos, then…! Like you, I hate the ice when it freezes over, as the pavements round here don\’t get cleared or gritted, so they become lethal!!! It\’s only a matter of time before someone has a serious accident!

Our plows hit the roads as soon as the first flake falls and we have special plows that can clear 3 feet of snow from 2 lanes of Interstate highway at 40MPH, or so they claim. During sleet or freezing rain events the trucks are out spraying liquid brine to stop ice forming on pavement while dry chemicals mixed with sand go down for snow. All of the car washes have high pressure under body sprays to wash the road chemicals off before they eat through the body and undercarriage. Our car washes get more business in the winter than in the summer!BTW: I have a very nice pair of winter boots, purchased a couple of years ago, with "waffle stomper" treads and 2000 grams of thinsulate insulation. So far they\’ve kept my feet warm down to -16F (-26.6C) and in 14 inches of snow. I haven\’t fallen off of them yet either……….operative word yet!

Hi Sandi,The snow we had earlier this year was actually awful ( ice with snow then ice and snow it tooks weeks to thaw out )… Bath being a spa town isn\’t used to it and as we\’re a massive valley it means transport comes to a standstill, also means walking anywhere means sliding down a massive hill or struggling to crawl up it … terrifying! It took me about 2 hours to walk to work. I managed to break my thumb a few years ago slipping over on the ice, not a nice experience I can tell you! Snow is lovely as long as you don\’t have to go anywhere in it…

Oh p.s.. when our lights were turned on traffic was appauling.. we had approximately 9,000 people turn up for the event, and traffic problems continued over the weekend ( because of the rugby and the Christmas market ). According to the paper it took up to 2 hours to get out of the Sainsbury\’s car park! Never mind trying to get out of Bath after that!!!

I love the snow, though I don\’t like the disruption it tends to cause to our buses and schools…Everything seems to come to a halt which I never understand in this day and age. I suppose I\’m also lucky that I don\’t have to go out in it much other than to play..When it turns to that horrible icy. brown slushy stuff..Well that\’s a completely different matter .

We\’ll have to pinch RMs snow ploughs and sprayers, because our councils don\’t seem to want to spend the time or money any more. Our pavements become leathal when the snow starts to thaw, then freezes over, and as we are on a very busy main road, I don\’t exactly care for walking in the road, either! So, basically, I hope we have knee-deep snow…or nothing at all!!

I\’ve been getting a lot of those nice little pink error messages recently whenever I\’ve tried to add comments. I am ashamed to admit that I even gave up trying on two occassions. It was either not going to add them or add five or six of the same comment. When I checked back there was nothing. Spaces is creaking a bit me thinks.Don\’t tell anyone but according to one forecast I checked earlier they said we\’d have snow showers tomorrow. Can\’t see it happening but there you go!

LOL @ RM…hohoho…!I\’m calm, thanks, Eileen…no queue in bank…didn\’t wait long for a bus to arrive…bus almost empty…no probs at work…and glad to be home…! Time for a nice relaxing cuppa…!PF, Robert\’s working on a promotional thing for one of the Indian restaurants, and the picture is of an elephant with howdah…and it\’s titchy! Very fiddly!Debs, when we moved to Lincoln in 75, we had no central heating, no carpets, and no sealed-unit windows or double glazing…new houses came as a basic empty house, so it was before you got all those fancy extras you get nowadays. We were on the end with fields round…and that Easter we were snowed in with blizzards…it was freezing!!! At least we had a coal-burning boiler in the kitchen, so that was where we spent a lot of time. I think people nowadays tend to take instant heat for granted, and many homes and offices (etc) are so over-heated it\’s unbearable!!
