MUSICAL JUNK – The Moves
As we are nearing the end of January 2010, my need for a major clear-out seems to have turned into a bizarre game of Musical Junk!
Move One: Start at the top and work my way down seemed like a good idea…at the time. So, I set to bringing stuff down from the loft and dumping it in the living-room and hallway, dumping long-discarded empty boxes out on the landing ready to be taken down to the recycle bin. This was going to be a major job, spread over several weeks, as I would only be able to do this when Robert was not in bed.
Move Two: Electrician turns up…can he have access to our cupboard and loft, as the council want easy access to the communal lighting and TV aerial gubbins that are currently in our flat. So, work commenced on removing the fuse box and such like and re-installing them out on the landing. Time to shift stuff out of the way so that he could work, so the cupboard got emptied into the hall! Some of the stuff that was in the hall then got dumped into the library, so that it was out of the way.
Move Three: A phone call from our former boss…do we want some deep red carpet? We said yes, and were told that there was a lot of it, as the rooms that it came from were pretty large. Where were we going to put it until we could get it laid? In the hallway! So, the stuff that had been dumped in the hall was all shifted into the living-room and library. This is fun, isn’t it!
Move four: Decision time…where is the carpet going to go? Living-room first. OK, living-room will need to be emptied, and we will need somewhere to put some of the furniture, won’t we…hence my start on a massive clear-out of the library at the weekend! See the before and after shots of the same corner…
It is the impetus that I need to actually look at the crap I have collected over the years…stuff like furniture and furnishing brochures from when I did the C&G soft furnishings and upholstery course at college back in 89/90!! Scraps of paper with notes and scribbles that are no longer relevant, plus old magazines and other papery crap…all formed quite a big, and very heavy, pile for the…you guessed it!…recycle bin!
So, my work for the next week or two is to quietly sit here and sift through years of stuff and wonder why the heck I kept this, or that, and get tough. I don’t NEED to keep it. It’s all RUBBISH! THROW IT AWAY!!!
This is the pile waiting to be vanquished…
Progress reports will be added as and when…wish me luck, because I’m gonna need it…!!!
For a moment Sandi, I read musical junk, The Movies. Thought you might have found or invented a plot. Guess it is me who has lost one. Yes? ;o)
Blimey! Two blogs in one month!!I no longer salvage junk because \’it might be useful for costumes or props\’, or for \’renovating\’…and I think before I bring anything home, now. I ask myself "Do I really NEED this?!" The only area where I am not so tough is…erm…books…! Though, saying that, the last couple of times I was in charity shops and picked up some books…I did put them back again and walked out empty-handed…! (I give myself a pat on the back for that act of bravery…and a big gold star!!!)
LOL, Natalia…maybe I should write the script…?!!
Like you I forever seem to be cleaning clearing, and wondering why I\’ve got so much stuff. It seems I start with such enthusiasm, get so far and then something will crop up and I lose interest. Have been good lately though, the lofts are organised and boxed up and several (about 9) binleners have been taken to various charity shops. Just got the book cupboard and dreaded lifetime of paperwork to get through.I don\’t know about a film, but I reckon we could set up Musical Junk as a daytime TV show. We would sure rival How Clean Is Your House LOLGood Luck with it all..
Or Dawna Walter\’s The Life Laundry…though saying that, I don\’t think it was a programme that ran for long. I do have her book in front of me…How To Stay De-junked Forever…so I hope I can gain some motivation and ideas from it…!!
Well done Sandi!! I\’m exhausted just looking at the amount you need to clear!I\’m awful with books.. I really nead a library just for me if I let myself get away with it – now if I buy a new book I have to get rid of an old one – very hard to do because I like to read them over and over again!
I like to read books again, too. I also love reference books and history books, biographies, natural history, interior design and soft furnishings, needlecrafts, forensics and crime detection…etc., etc., etc…!Stopping myself bringing junk in was a first step, asking if I really need something is another step in the right direction…and evicting it is the next step….!
haha I\’m good at evicting!!!As for books.. I suppose I\’m a bit away with the fairies and tend to immerse myself in complete fantasy – currently reading the Twilight saga
Can\’t make up my mind what to read at the moment…have just read Set in Darkness by Ian Rankin…I had read all the Rebus books except Set in Darkness, and The Falls…so I need to get hold of The Falls next…until then…dunno…!As for evicting, can you come and lend some weight to the Eviction Squad…?
I\’d love to but you might have to leave me to it… it\’s a painful process!
I know! I guess that is why, when something finally gives up the ghost, it gets dumped in the loft or shed. I guess this is to be able to detatch myself from said item before throwing it away. (Some items are like old friends, you know…it\’s hard to just dump them…!)
Luck! Lots and lots of luck, I am quietly ignoring all my junk as I type 🙂
I spent two years ignoring all this junk when I was too ill to do anything (cocktail of drugs prescribed for over- then under-active thyroid…all together would you believe!!) that is why is built up in the first place. Now I am fighting this Crap Monster…and I am gonna win!!!!
Is that Robert\’s shoe sticking up out of the recycly bin and is that a foot in the shoe? Robert, keep moving. She\’s dumping everything that isn\’t!
Wait a mo…that foot is in one of the photos in the new Album…The James\’s v The Crap Monster…!!
So, how did it end up in the recycle bin? That\’s not Homer\’s foot is it?
Oh Sandi… remember the pigs in Bath? This year it\’s to be lions! hehe
Eh? What? There are no feet in these four photos, RM…Robert\’s or anyone elses…neither is there a recycle bin because that is outside in the yard. Robert is in bed because he works nights…and now I am confused…! Oh, dear…!Lions, Eileen…great! I look forward to seeing them. The pigs were lovely.
Yo Sandi! Good Morning! Hope u clearing & recycling goes well, I don\’t ebvy u the task! Luv PF XXX
Thanks PF…the only problem here is that I get side-tracked by the magazines, which I will sit and flick through rather than get on with the cleaning and sorting! Nawdy Sandi…someone crack that whip…!!
<< wanders in, ears pick up, did some one mention a whip? >>Crack!!!!well I wouldn\’t want to dissapoint ;o)xxx
LMAO…nice one Eileen…! OK…done washing, washing-up, just had a wash, and have got fridge shelves partly washed…magazines abandoned for now…um…can I go to the loo, now, please Miss…?
Tehehehe…Yes of course you can.Does anyone one know how Rachel is? Not seen her about for ages! Or is she over on the dark side?
Thanks…that\’s better…aaah.Rachel…no, I haven\’t seen anything from Rachel for a while…hope she\’s OK. I think we will all have to invade her space and see if she\’s just been busy, or needs cheering up. I certainly need cheering up when it\’s all grey and miserable…like it is at the mo!
Rachel has been very busy over on Twitter… See her on there most days..Hope she hasn\’t forgotten about us?I\’m all up for an invasion if you are…a cheery one of course ;o)
Sorry folks, I\’m as miserable as sin these days and not feeling very chatty. Please don\’t ask why, all will be revealed in time. I haven\’t forgotten about you 😛 just not fun to around much so best off keeping quiet. Take care. xx
Sorry that you feel so miserable Rachel, will we see you at the Falmouth Imbolc Fair ? It would be good to catch up. Sandi, we have this large cupboard upstairs that no-one dares venture into. Not brave enough yet !
Sorry to hear that you are feeling so down , Rachel, I know exactly how you are feeling, as it descends on me from time to time, and I just cannot bring myself to comment. It\’s probably the lack of decent daylight…sunlight…too many grey miseable days really get me down, too. At least it is still light at 4.30pm now…yay!Lavinia, I just cannot imagine you having anywhere that you would need to be brave to venture into…but, then again, most people have their \’Trebus\’ areas or rooms for dumping stuff \’to be dealt with later\’.
How did I know about the foot in the recycle bin? Oh…..that\’s right…….Simon said he hadn\’t told you about the surveillance sat………never mind!
Oh, that it was a binful of trolls…(sigh) Well, I can dream, can\’t I…?!!
Ah Lavinia has her cupboard from hell and I have my hell of a cupboard. The big old cupboard in my bedroom — it used to be a cupboard bed when the cottage was modernised in 1770 — is now my "junk" hole I know I should clear the old Amps, mike stands, diving gear, camping gear, hunting odds and sods and every other thing out but each time I try to sort it out it all just seems to get shoved back in there again — however music gear will definitely go soon as it just takes up too much room, perhaps a 200w amp in the studio to serenade my neighbours, might be a good idea!!!!Rachel — see you in Falmouth, this time I will stop and drop what I am doing to talk to you!
Hmm.. I don\’t have a cupboard from hell, I do however have a shed from hell that I am still waiting very impatiently for the eldest to come and clear his car bits from so I can sort it out. He did manage to take the bucket seats and wheels but I still have a mass of body parts and tools lying around. When he took the seats I found my steam cleaner!
So…what areas of your home are stuffed to the gunwales with junk…those cupboards, rooms, sheds, under and behind furniture…that Mr Trebus would have been proud of…? Do tell…
Under the eves at the toppa the house. They are partitioned off & have a little door 2 go in2! Everything get wanged int2 them…both sides of the house! U take ur life in ur hands stepping in there! Hope u have a Great Day! Luv PF XXX
I don\’t have any areas! Mind it did help emptying the house when I nearly got married back in 2005. I started with a completely empty house and no junk to bring with me! Although I wish I could get into Ben\’s room with a few bin liners….
Our house has THE HOVEL (Laura\’s room). She\’s been in the process of "cleaning it" since the day she threw all of her belongings in a pile on the floor when we first moved in over 5 years ago. Sam won\’t even go in there! Then there is Frankie\’s collection of "good stuff" taking up about 75% of my shed (and has been for the past 5+ years). I will admit that she finally cleared enough out this summer that I can actually see my workbench and some of my tools. Does anyone need any Christmas decorations? We have enough to decorate at least half of most small nations and I\’m even willing to pay shipping costs for anyone willing to take some of this junk……..I mean good stuff.
Ah…normal people do have their…er…\’collections\’…and…um…\’good stuff\’ as RM calls it, and I bet all those beautiful homes, featured in the glossy magazines (that I drool over!) also have their \’no-go\’ areas, or just shift stuff out of the way so that the photographer can get a good shot. Looking at some of the Case Studies in the book also makes me feel better, because some of those places were far worse than our humble abode.Anyway, this is the year we clear out the crap, and free up all that space…and I think I shall find some pictures to put on the pin-board to remind me of what I am aiming at…!!
When Frankie hits the lottery and we build our dream home I intend to install a trap door over a bottomless pit in my new storage shed/work shop/fortess of solitude/hideout. That way I can just open the door and drop the "good stuff" in.
Well RM; you missed out….I needed good Christmas stuff…and I could probably add more to my collection of totes at Angela\’s house. I have to go clean out her garage so we can pull Cody\’s car in there to work on it…..
Cooeeey! Sandi you\’ve been spammed….I always thought it was normal to have a junk room?
WTF is GFF…I don\’t know that person(?) so I am not going to check it out…but will just delete it, instead…!!Eileen, if you have room for a junk room, fine…but our junk has kinda got out of control…hence CM!!
lol.. morning :o)The one day I\’m sitting here at work with nothing to do and no one\’s about.. typical! Only got an hour left as it\’s Jenny\’s funeral this afternoon.
Afternoon, Eileen…I\’m here…though I have been getting into my crap clearing and floor revealing again. Blimey…floor space…!! We\’ve got some…!!!
Yay! The only problem with that is it means you\’ve more floor space to hoover!
White van man available for cash jobs only, you\’re need is my greed. C.M\’s a speciality. Ask me no questions and I\’ll tell you no lies.
Yes, Eileen…but at least we won\’t be tripping over stuff all the time…we are lucky we haven\’t had any nasty accidents…!!Simon…are you starting your own business? Sounds like the perfect slogan!
This laptop is taking some getting used to, but at least it\’s a lot quiker than my old compter. I\’m getting a tad pissed off with having to do disc clean-ups every day, just to keep it going that little bit longer!!! And when it goes text only, and everything is over-lapping and jumbled…I just wanna scream!!!!That\’s it…rant over…time to go and do Robert\’s sarnies…ho hum…!
Eh- what – a business ! Sshh no no- just helping out a friend err uhum .
I left my laptop at Brians – stupid stupid woman! Hmm.. white van… I could do with one of them to clear some rubble from the jungle ;o)
morning Sandi, ((hugs))it\’s probably been suggested already… you could always get rid of the stuff at a car boot sale… or ebay, how\’s the new computer doing?xxx
The car boot sale was suggested by Robert, himself, a few years ago, so I got all kinds of stuff together ready…but it never happened…maybe next weekend…or the next…or…? As for E-bay…I haven\’t a clue…! Robert opened an acount, but hasn\’t done anything with it…just like our kitchen…!!! Grrr!!! Besides, it\’s mostly papery crap…oh, ad a black binbag of astro turf (why?), and a couple of bagsfu of old Esso uniforms…anyone want any of these…? Free to a good home…!
Hmm….Don\’t know about a WEEK or 2! Think you mit be sifting for a MONTH or 10! 😉 And you are going to sit "quietly!" in order to achieve this?? Hmm…lol….good luck!! ;))
I know, I know…as I have mentioned, this is my…um…\’project\’ for this year. I use to be so organised and tidy, but then two very untidy men later I feel as though I am fightinga losing battle…but I must be strong!!!!
Ooooh Sandi! Car boot sales are Great Fun! I have had about 3! I luv the way peops think they need 2 expkain WHY their buying the item & who it\’s 4!!! Hehehehehe, an entertaining morning! Make sure u have sticky labelled all ur items b4 setting off! Hope u decide 2 have one! Luv PF XXX
Have done car boots before, and learned the hard way when all the vultures descended on us as we started to unpack the stuff, deliberately confusing us!!! (\’Us\’ being Mum, me and my sister).
Don\’t know much about car boots. Motorcycle boots, combat boots, cowboy boots ……..know all about them but no car boots.
I used to love going to car boots, there\’s a few held round here every Sunday, but no buses and I don\’t drive so we always miss out…A good way of getting rid of stuff and earning money.
