Another Visit To The Old Neighbourhood

Erith
In 1975 I moved to Lincoln with my family, from Kent.  At first, I hated this small, provincial city and wanted to go home…but I was stuck here.  Anyway, that’s another blog, for another day!
Apart from a couple of visits, in the early days, I have not seen the place since, apart from a couple of pictures…but now, thanks to Google, I have been able to wander the streets and marvel at the new shops and open spaces, and to remember those places that have not changed…
First of all, I was so glad that the concrete fortress (top left) had been swept away and replaced with a brick-built shopping precinct that looked friendly and inviting.  There are modern apartment blocks all around the town, as well as houses and bungalows, so people are once more living close to the shops.  There are plenty of grassed areas with trees and shrubs, which make the town look fresh and clean.  I love it!
You can no longer see the river from the High Street, but the Riverside Gardens have been re-landscaped with plenty of trees and shrubs, pathways, raised flower beds and benches…lovely.
This view of the Town Hall has changed…Erith 012
Gone are the small parade of shops, and the little road down to the station, instead there is a large roundabout…how open is that!  They must have built over the railway line to create such a wide space.
Moving up the hill to Northumberland Heath,  Bexley Road seems not to have changed much at all…even Wellingtons store is still there!!  That was a surprise!
The Top Shop, at the top of Horsa Road, is also still there, as is the Halfway Shop Erith 022 at the bottom of the road.  Other corner shops, Like Bob’s, on the corner of Horsa and Ethelbert roads, and the butchers opposite the Halfway, have not fared so well, and are now just houses.  The view across to the park and Duchess of Kent pub, on the corners of Sussex Road still look the same, though.
Another thing that I have noticed is that all the pubs that I remembered Erith 034 (not from going in them, as I was too young at the time), are still there and look much the same as they used to…unlike Lincoln, where many old pubs have been closing at quite an alarming rate, and the chains, like Wetherspoons, are thriving.  The small shops are still there…all independent…with only an occasional ‘High Street’ name…and only one boarded-up shop!
Anyway…down Horsa Road we go, to my old house.  Erith 025 OMG!  What have they done to it?!!  There is one thing that has happened to this place, and it’s like a terrible disease…render!!  Render, and pebble-dash, are never a good idea, as they often don’t let the brickwork and mortar breathe, and can later cause more problems than they originally covered up.  And those cheap-looking windows!!  I shall say no more.
So, when I moved here in ’75, I wanted to go home.  When I visited in the late 70s I found the place to be grimy and closed in, and was so glad to get back to Lincoln.  Now, the grimy, graffiti-covered nastiness has been swept away, and Erith is a thriving town once more.  A big pat on the back for the town planners who have included lots of parking, trees and open spaces, to make Erith an attractive place to live and shop once more!
I am impressed.

Another memory I have is of getting off of the bus, after Saturday morning cinema, and waiting at the zebra crossing for the traffic to stop. There was nothing coming up the road, and the traffic duly stopped on the other side. As I began to cross the road, a car emerged at speed from Avenue Road, knocking me flying back up towards the bus-stop. I was extremely shaken and frightened, especially when people crowded round to see if I was OK. I ran home and hid in the garage, shaking. The bruise I had on my thigh was black from knee to hip!

Just past the pub, both primary and secondary schools have been swept away, but the front playing field is still there, and so is the wall and original railings. It\’s such a shame that all the blossom trees, lining the drive-way, have also gone.

Have just been telling Mum about Google Street View, and about how Erith has changed for the better, and she said that last time she was down there, a few years ago, the place was still a mess, and all the (remaining) shops closed early because there was no-one around, and the Riverside gardens were neglected and over-grown. She was pleased that Erith has been re-born and is a real town once more, with housing and apartments close by…how it should be.

I love Google Earth and was pleasantly surprised the first time I tried street view and found a decent image of my mom\’s front door. Thanks for taking me along on your journey down memory lane. One thing….zebra crossing?? We have deer crossings but I didn\’t know y\’all had zebras running loose in the UK.

LOL! Black and white stripes on the road…where you can cross. Traffic does not have to stop, unless someone is actually on the crossing. Then they invented pelican crossings and now there are puffin crossings…and to confuse us further, we must \’only cross with the green man\’! Green Man?!! What flamin\’ green man?!!! Not the Hulk, I hope…?!!!

  11. ROCKET permalink
    April 5, 2010 6:52 pm

Oh, I see! We call them pedestrians, not zebras. Some of them wear stripes and others could pass for a striped horse when seen from the rear but they only have 2 legs. Our zebras are black and white striped ponies and are imported from Africa but we don\’t allow them to roam the streets. We also have two legged critters who do nothing but make a nuisance of themselves and are referred to as horse\’s asses.

LOL @ Sandy\’s comment! Sometimes I wish there were seperate places for smokers! Walking up the street, you have to weave in and out of all the blasted smoke-screens that form outside certain shops!RM, see above comment re two-legged critters that make a nuisance of themselves!Anne, have you got 3D glasses, otherwise it just goes blurred in two colours!

Another difference between Erith and Lincoln is that Lincoln is a jungle of ruddy railings, herding pedestrians to the crossings that are now around the corner, where you cannot see what is coming! Cars coming round the corner are faced with red lights, resulting in a lot of near misses. It is only a matter of time before someone is seriously injured!!! I, for one, do not like using these crossings, and will cross further down the road!

Our policemen are afraid to sleep on the job for fear of their fellow officers eating all the donuts. Besides, the sections of interstates 77 and 81 running through our county are notorious for speed limit enforcement (read HUGE fines) and are patrolled by sheriff\’s deputies and state troopers. Our guys get to run with lights and sirens a lot and they love it!

@ Simon – Video #1 is disturbing because a deer with no fear of humans is lacking in survival instincts. Then I realized it is a Japanese video and I couldn\’t help looking for the Honda logo on what is obviously a robot deer. As for videos 2 and 3; they are obviously evidence that the use of hallucinogens is widespread in the UK.@ Eileen – I forgot about that. That was a nice nostalgic blog, I love to look at the history of old places. I went into Google earth a few weeks ago to look up my old house too, I think I mentioned it, it wasn\’t much different except for the cars.I also remember the Green man and Pelican crossings, previous to them it was simply the Belisha beacon that flashed, I can\’t remember whether you were supposed to cross when it was flashing or when it stopped! I must have got it right \’cos I\’m still alive. At school we had to learn <look right. look left, and right again> then cross, I can\’t recall being told not to if there was a car coming, but unless you were on a main road there weren\’t many cars around, and NO, it wasn\’t coach and horses, I\’m not that old. Hmmmmmm, could be but I am wondering about Simon\’s involvement in that volcanic eruption. Am I the only one to notice his uncharacteristic quiet spell during that incident. The whole "helping a friend move" story seems a bit thin.

Yup! When he digs me, I say…."I\’m not snoring, I\’m not even asleep!" Tho, it does only happen when I have a cold!!!

That proves my theory; Simon is channeling a puppet! What\’s more unsettling is Sandi\’s comment about blowing up the sunset in my comments! I think snorting all that volcanic ash is causing psychotic behavior over on that side of the pond. Someone wake up, Dick Cheney. Tell Donald Rumsfeld to dig up his stash of cattle prods and water boarding tables. We\’ll save y\’all if it kills ya! We\’s \’mericans and we know what\’s best for everybody! OH MY GOD…..I MUST HAVE SCREWED UP MY MEDS…..I"M TURNING INTO A REPUBLICAN!!!

Ah…..that\’s much better.Thank you for providing a forum for my breakdown and recovery as well as a place for me to announce to those who are unaware that TOMORROW IS SANDI\’S BIRTHDAY!!!!! Simon is getting the chimps all decked out in their finest hula skirts, party hats and roller skates. Just wait until her neighbors see that mob rolling up Newark Road! MWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Oh…okay, Simon ::wink,wink:: @ Sandi – I will be 29 forever and for very good reason. For my 30th birthday, when I was still single, wild and free, I took a page from my favorite uncle and celebrated my birthday for an entire month. There is no doubt in what\’s left of my mind that the fact that I survived is nothing short of miraculous; a miracle that will never happen again. Even if I was still hale and healthy the memory of the stupendous hangover I suffered is enough to make me cringe in fear. Even though I have not imbibed at all in the past 18 years I am not operating at an alcohol deficit because I soaked up enough booze during that celebration to last me until I\’m 135 years old!
