The Month In (Not Many) Pictures

June 1, 2010

The blog I was going to write, about our day at Newstead Abbey, didn’t materialise due to me simply not having my writing head on, so today I will attempt a quick run-down of the month…

On Bank Holiday Monday (3 May) we set out early-ish and headed for Newstead Abbey, CNV00002 near Mansfield, Nottinghamshire.  Although the sky was grey and leaden, the sun was shining, and I was surprised to find that there were not many visitors about.  CNV00025 We wandered about the British camp talking to people and taking photos, then headed back to the car for lunch.  When I tried to remove the film from my SLR, the darned thing snapped, so I opened it up and pulled the film out, then re-loaded.  (What I forgot about was the lack of visitors in all those shots…blast it!!)

CNV00020

Later on we took a wander around the house, then headed around to the field where the battle re-enactment was going to take place.  CNV00005 Here, there was another British encampment and the French encampment, side by side.

I had been looking out for some friends, who were taking part…Lisa and Adrian, who I’d met at the Jane Austen Festival last year, and Gavin (who was playing a French soldier this weekend…they take it in turns, you know.)

CNV00011 The weather had been very changeable, throughout the day, with sunshine interspersed with rain…and even a couple of very heavy hail showers…!  By the time the battle commenced, my umbrella had been up and down several times!

In all, it had been a great day out, and I was smitten with the world of re-enactment…!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The rest of the month was…well, I felt very down in the couple of weeks following Newstead, as it was back to normal with nothing to look forward to until September.  Then we had a mini heat-wave, and the humidity had me feeling vey low indeed.
Painting the hallway 2010 012
This bank holiday weekend , Robert wanted to get on and get the living-room carpet laid…it had been in the hallway for  long enough!  So on Saturday, we shifted junk, books, plants, and furniture out of the room and finally got it down!
Yesterday was the turn of the hallway, so while I was filling and sanding, Robert got started on the painting…we will need a new tub of paint to finish the job, but it’s looking brighter and better already.
Today, he has got the pasting table out and is carrying on with the living-room…he’s on a roll…LOL!
    Hope the turn of the month has found you a bit cheerier then, especially with your redecoration. Don\’t you find tea tastes especially good while decorating – though perhaps not so much better as to make me go off and decorate something.
    A good start to the summer. I have a sneaky suspicion that a few more re enactments may be featured before the years end! Maybe even with yourself as one of those partaking. Can just see you up there with all the Generals or plucking gold teeth from the fallen! lolDecorating does have a feel good thing to it.
    Somehow Sandi, I think you have had quite a rewarding month and if Bob wants to be odd job to me also, I guess I will have to stand in line. The Wall paper looks rather chic btw. The photo\’s of Newstead are rather stately. Off out now for my brain scan. Someone suggested that I should be fed rear first into the scanner as it was more likely to found this way. :oD :oD Don\’t you just love sarcasm? ;o) xx
    What lovely pictures of Newstead. I\’m with Curiosity in betting you\’ll be up there in costume before the season\’s end.Funnily enough I was thinking it\’s time to get on with our bedroom, it\’s only been nine months since I bought the paint (Does paint go off? I hope not!)
    Lol re Natalia\’s comment….though its made me kinda nervous to add one myself as it might be suggested that a similar scan would require some men (not me ofcourse!!) to go in hip first! 🙂 Im contemplating redecorating too……which means its at least six months off yet!!
    Looks like you will all have to form an orderly queue for Robert\’s (decorating!) services…LOL!Sandy…you are not wrong…tea…good idea…kettle going on again…!Anne…funny you should mention that…I had pictured myself dressed as a scavenger, going around after the battle…not quite dead? A bash on the bonce…now, what\’s \’e got in this pocket? A nice watch…hehehe…!Natalia, the wallpaper is from the 80s…marbled effect. My brother bought it for his bedroom (when we still lived at home)…I like it.Sarah, if the paint has not been opened, then it should keep just fine.
    Thanks for that Sandi. I cancelled an intended trip to Yorkshire this weekend so seems like a window of opportunity has just conveniently opened! Have just frit the daylights out of Robin by asking if he fancied camping out in the spare room for the rest of the week without mentioning I would be going too and why!Need some more white emulsion and possibly another paintbrush but shall not be joining the queue for Robert\’s services.
    Wonderful pictures! I have been down in the dumps for awhile….can\’t seem to find anything to look forward to except the grandson\’s graduation this Sunday….So haven\’t blogged in awhile….maybe I\’ll get inspired this weekend….Must be wonderful having someone who likes to help out around the house! My husband\’s idea of helping around the house is eating all the food and filling the sink with dishes!Hugs!!
    This was started on Sunday morning at about 08:30, not Saturday. I thought Sandi should have at least a day\’s notice of my intentions, and I woke her up very early (for her) on Monday…Decorating can be a bit of a chore but, on the plus side, you get immediate results so there is a definite feeling of achievement as the job progresses. Cutting the day short to go to work was a pain but we got a good ten hours in yesterday as I didn\’t have to go driving!
    I can\’t let Frankie see this; at least the redecorating inanity. She might get ideas…..like installing that laminated flooring in the bathroom and laundry nook. My plan is to teach Laura\’s boyfriend how to install flooring while I supervise.
    OK…so I get my days mixed up…I always get confused due to bank holidays…! :-(Yep…that is a good idea, RM…you\’re a sly old fox…!! Talking of foxes…their strange and eerie noises kept me awake this morning. That is the first time I have heard foxes, believe it or not…!
    Noisy yappy beasts but whistling hedgehogs, though rarer are far worse and as for mating nightingales…. well!…just don\’t get me started on mating nightingales…
  19. Sandi permalink
    June 1, 2010 10:47 pm
    As far as I know, we don\’t get nightingales here…but hedgehogs there are a-plenty…snorting, snuffling and grunting, but whistling..?There are plenty of foxes round here I was only yards from one on the river bank…we stared t each other for a few seconds, then it just turned and trotted off…it was an awesome experience. But I have never, ever heard them before. When I wake in the night, I can always hear the Tawny owls hooting and screeching…but never foxes.
    What an interesting insight into your life Sandi, starting off with the stateliness of Newstead Abbey, then the domesticity of painting, to the intricacies of the SLR camera, stealing from the dead[how low can you get] till it degenerates to the mating of hedgehogs, good heavens life\’s rich tapestry all in one blog and comments.most enjoyable though.
    I got Ben and his friend coming home at 00.30 and deciding to watch tv and eat food, followed by me telling Ben off for unacceptable behaviour, followed by them deciding they were going to bed at approx 01.50…. I did try really hard to make LOADS of noise when I got up at 06.30 to go to work. You wait till I actually manage to see him when I\’m awake and he\’s not stoned.. I bet even you will hear my rant!
I know just how you feel when it\’s all over and everything goes back to normal tho…so flat and boring with nothing much to do and all the excitement over…I was the same when all the horse shows etc finished…WLS photo sharing wise…I thut it had become F/bk, but it seems to have evolved into Flikr!!!!
