To Brayford Pool & Back

Today, being Tuesday, I went into town to meet Mum for lunch. We went to our usual place, had our usual choices…how boring! I know.

We usually have a wander up or down the High Street, maybe browse a few shops, or on occasion stroll down to St Marks. Today, though, I had to take a pair of boots in to be re-heeled and re-soled, so Mum said she would wander round M&S while I nipped along to Newland to drop them in.

As we were standing on High Bridge,  I realised that I could nip down the steps and go via the river to the Brayford…so Mum came with me.

It was another glorious day, so a wander around Brayford Pool is a pleasant way to while away an hour or two, so after I dropped in my boots that is what we did.

In a couple of weeks, there will be a bike fest here, so I hope the weather is as lovely as today’s.

Here are some pictures of the Brayford Pool, an inland port that was  important to Lincoln’s prosperity, and is now a marina…look at all those lovely boats (sigh)   The buildings are part of the university, and were used as a film location for   Possession (2002) starring Gwyneth Paltrow.

 The River Witham joins the Brayford Pool, in the south-eastern corner  from the south, and flows eastwards through the city, passing under High Bridge.  This side of the bridge is called The Glory Hole…that’s Mum walking ahead of me.

Can you see the brick vaulting underneath?  I’d love to go under there in a boat, and take better photos than this.   Anyway here are a couple of the building (I would have taken more, but people were waiting to go by, and the old stone steps are quite narrow).

Off to Cornhill, next, for an ice cream, then House of Fraser for our afternoon cuppa…then it was home for Mum and work for me (sorry for swearing, here!)
