To Brayford Pool & Back

June 2, 2009

Today, being Tuesday, I went into town to meet Mum for lunch. We went to our usual place, had our usual choices…how boring! I know.

We usually have a wander up or down the High Street, maybe browse a few shops, or on occasion stroll down to St Marks. Today, though, I had to take a pair of boots in to be re-heeled and re-soled, so Mum said she would wander round M&S while I nipped along to Newland to drop them in.

High Bridge As we were standing on High Bridge,  I realised that I could nip down the steps and go via the river to the Brayford…so Mum came with me.

It was another glorious day, so a wander around Brayford Pool is a pleasant way to while away an hour or two, so after I dropped in my boots that is what we did.

In a couple of weeks, there will be a bike fest here, so I hope the weather is as lovely as today’s.

Here are some pictures of the Brayford Pool, an inland port that was  impToday 004ortant to Lincoln’s prosperity, and is now a marina…look at all those lovely boats (sigh)   The buildings are part of the university, and were used as a film location for   Possession (2002) starring Gwyneth Paltrow.

Today 002

The River Witham joins the Brayford Pool, in the south-easternToday 010 corner  from the south, and flows eastwards through the city, passing under High Bridge.  This side of the bridge is called The Glory Hole…that’s Mum walking ahead of me.

Today 012

Can you see the brick vaulting underneath?  I’d love to go under there in a boat, and take better photos than this.Today 013   Anyway here are a couple of the buildingToday 014 (I would have taken more, but people were waiting to go by, and the old stone steps are quite narrow).

Off to Cornhill, next, for an ice cream, then House of Fraser for our afternoon cuppa…then it was home for Mum and work for me (sorry for swearing, here!)

This tree is in Cornhill, by the way…Today 016

What a difference in the weather, today! It\’s calm, grey…and cool…and I\’m loving it. OK, I prefer it to be sunny, but I love the fact that it\’s cool, and I can do things without breaking into a sweat…(I hate sweat!!)

Looks wonderful to me!We had bright sunshine and temperatures of 27° yesterday (it was almost unbearable until I got home and relaxed in the garden) today it\’s going to be about 24° and already quite hot with blue skies.

Still grey and cool, here, but a bit brighter…and, I can see a blue bit!! The satalite image, at work yesterday, showed a nasty, stormy mass heading for Lincoln, but all we\’ve had is cool grey. It\’s dry, which is the main thing.

I think we\’re getting that tomorrow. Although it would be nice if it did rain – my poor garden is now in shock having been hacked down! Lol

It\’ll recover. I really need to get out and water my pottery….unless we have ome rain. I promised myself that I would not let any more of my plants perish through neglect, so I must make an effort. Poor things.I used to be out there all the time, and had quite an oasis of green…until a bad neighbour moved into the ground-floor flat, and that put me off and spoiled my enjoyment. Now, it has been a good few years, and bad neighbour has been long gone…so…must make an effort!

Oh I know the feeling! My garden was lovely until I got ill then it all went downhill, I have no excuse now though! (well I still have CFS but am normally ok just occasionally it hits me).I\’ve spent the last few days walking up to my boss\’s house and watering all his pots (takes about 1½ hrs) making good use of my PA skills hey? LOL

And I have missed all the fun having been stuck in a waiting room at the hospital accompanying my Auntie to her appointment. Then had to photograph all her plants in her postage stamp garden that you would think was bigger than Kew. She has some beautiful clematis, I shall put them on my stuff later.

Ah, Mike…bet you cooled off with a nice stiff drink…! If you didn\’t…why not, \’cos you earned it!Another time, we will do the whole Brayford walk, rather than just a wee wander along Brayford Wharf North (Cafes, restraunts and bars, including the Barge on the Brayford which serves excellent food). We carry on to the end, the walk over the Brayford Bridge to the uni side, which is the best side for wildlife, as the walkways are lined by trees and bushes where all the Muscovy ducks nest. I remember a time when there was only one Muscovy duck, now there are many…but they never seem to swim far from their bank, unlike the swans which are seen all over the place. Strange.

I love taking pictures of trees… 😀
